As a resort gift shop operator, you have the unique ability to impact your customers’ vacations in a positive way. There are a few key ways you can serve your customers that will leave them more than satisfied with their gift shop experience—and likely to recommend you to their friends and family back home.

Below, we’re looking at five such methods to help you and your gift shop achieve success in the year ahead.

Offer online resources

Making a good impression on customers through in-store displays, innovative products and overall service is the first step—but continuing that impression online is just as important. If your customers had a good experience in your store, they will likely want to continue that experience by shopping online or checking back in with your store website as they wait for their next visit. Offer your customer a way to do this by printing your website URL on store bags, brochures and other items.

Maintain an active online/social media presence

Once your website is up and running, don’t be afraid to delve into the world of social media. Platforms like Twitter and Facebook allow you to connect with your customers in a way that you just couldn’t do 15 or 20 year ago. Use these services to interact with customers before, during or after their trip to Florida. You can encourage them to promote your store or come in for special, exclusive offers. Social media is just one more way to get in touch with customers, so be sure to utilize it.

Sell and highlight what they’re looking for

One of the simplest and most essential ways to serve your customers is to sell and promote the items that you know they’re looking for. This might change with the seasons—such as warm fleece sweaters in the winter to spray fans and visors in the warmer months—but you should always know what your customers are looking for so you can stock up and provide them with whatever they need.

Provide something new

Always be thinking about the item or items in your store that stand out from the rest. While some items—such as hats, shirts, sunglasses, etc.—will always be popular, there are others that you can purchase that other stores in your area just aren’t. Find these items and give customers one more reason to choose your store over all the others on the block.

Create an experience for customers

Finally, be sure to always create an experience for your customers. From the moment they walk into your store to the moment they walk out with their purchases, you should strive to create an atmosphere that makes them want to return soon. This atmosphere is a combination of your in-store displays, theming, customer service and other aspects. 

Your customers may only be in your store once during their vacation, but a positive, unique experience will encourage them to come back the next time they’re in town.
