Should this piece be a commemorative item for a special holiday, anniversary or other event… or should it be a year-round item that will serve your customers now and many months from now? By thinking about these questions, you should be able to achieve a better understanding of the result you’re aiming for.
How can you stand out from the rest?
No matter what you’re designing, you should always strive to stand out as a retailer and a designer. What about this product will set it apart from your competitors? Even if it’s a small thing—your logo or a unique design—it’s something to consider during your design process.
What do your customers want or need?
Since you’re selling to your customers, their needs and preferences should always be at the head of your design decisions. How can you best serve them while they’re enjoying their vacation and your resort? This might mean serving a practical need or a need for mementos and treasures from their trip. No matter what you’re designing, put yourself in your customers’ shoes and make decisions with them in mind. While it may seem like an obvious idea, it’s a surprisingly effective way to make difficult decisions!
What worked in the past?
Finally, one of the best and most efficient ways to make a decision regarding the design of an item is to think about what worked in the past. While there’s something to be said about branching out and taking risks, it is often equally wise to stick to what your customers have been proven to love and purchase the most. By making decisions with past successes in mind, you can work with business savvy and experience on your side—and that’s never a bad thing!
